Bachelor of Science (Medical Laboratory Sciences)

MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must have obtained at least the minimum cut-off points for the year as determined from the following subject cluster drawn from the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) at “C+” level or its equivalent for each of the following subjects: Mathematics or Physics, Chemistry / Physical sciences, Biology/ Biological Science, English or Kiswahili and/or other health related courses/qualification recognized by the University Senate.

CAREER PROGRESSION

When you have completed your degree, your laboratory skills, knowledge and attitude gained during the Bachelor of Science (Medical Laboratory Science) course, are directly transferable. You can enroll in a Master of Science (Medical Laboratory Science) (MSc. MLS) or any health related programme at master’s level after which you can peruse a PhD programmes in the area of your specialization.

CAREER OPPORTUNITY

Medical laboratory sciences is a biology/chemistry-based bachelor’s degree that prepares students for exciting, challenging and dynamic careers in places such as hospital laboratories and clinics, forensic laboratories, veterinary clinics, research laboratories and product development, insurance underwriting, food, cosmetic and consumer-product testing laboratories, molecular biotechnology laboratories, Peace Corps, medical product sales and marketing, pharmaceutical companies and managerial or supervisory roles in a laboratory.

Professional experts in this area examine blood, urine, skin, and other specimens of the body. Such test findings play a key role in disease identification, diagnosis and treatment.

Laboratory scientists find themselves in high demand. And with projected growth for all occupations expected to be above average, laboratory science offers good job protection.
